about

When you make a solo record you need friends.

I'd been writing the songs for this record for a while but were they any good? The monster of self doubt stalked me. That's where Vom Ritchie was so important. I'd make home demos on a laptop, email them to him and wait with baited breath for the reaction. Usually, I'd get an enthusiastic call from his Drumming Monkey bar saying how great everyone thought the latest song was. How important those calls were in giving me the confidence to carry on and dare to have the idea of putting out a record of my own. I couldn't have done it otherwise.

And then there was Tony Barber. Another friend, Mariano, from Argentina put us in touch and told me to listen to the work he had done with The Buzzcocks and others. So we met up at his studio. Well, studio is a bit of a grand term. You take the road out of Epping and after a few miles head through a village hall car park and out the other side. The potholed track runs on into the middle of nowhere and eventually hits a farm, which by coincidence was owned by Knox from The Vibrators’ grandad. At the back of the farm is a dingley dell house previously inhabited by Crass and 50 yards down the garden is a shed. That's Tony's studio.

But it works, especially with Tony on the controls recording a guitar through a two inch speaker or looking at the results of my keyboard playing on the screen, deleting all the bum notes and somehow making it sound good. "I think I should play that again" I would say. "I would" he'd reply, "you couldn't play it any worse!". Sometimes I need bringing down a peg or two! Not only is Tony a whizz in the studio but he taught me to play and sing better and added so many important touches and arrangements to the record.

And I couldn’t forget my family. Inspiration for many of the songs and always there with love and support.

So here it is. 35 years in the making. I hope it’s worth the wait.

Track Name: The One
They said it’s over
When Stephen left high school
Too long spent messing
Staying away and playing the fool

They said it’s crazy
Drumming in a band
No good being hopeful
Playing all those one night stands

But now he’s the one
Yeah he’s the one
Having the fun
Being the one
Playing in the sun
Yeah he’s the one
Having the fun
Being the one

Back home for now
And everyone’s his friend
They all remember
Saying he’d make it in the end
No doubt about it
He’s really riding high
New boots and panties
Anything he wants to try

And now he’s the one……

Now everything is alright
Now everything is wonderful
Now everything is altogether bright

Now he’s the one……
Track Name: Thinking
Well I’ve been thinking
Thinkin that I’d better get better
Better at bein a bit better
Whenever, She needs me

And I’ve been thinking
Thinking bout writing her a letter
Writing her a letter just to let her
Know forever that I care

Thinkin bout all the times I wasn’t there
Thinkin bout all the times I didn’t care
Thinkin bout all the times I was unfair
Times I vanished in thin air
Disappeared to God knows where

And I’ve been thinking
Thinking bout maybe just quittin
Quitin my lying and drinkin
And thinking about her

Thinkin bout all the times I wasn’t there
Thinkin bout all the times I didn’t care
Thinkin bout all the times I was unfair
Times I vanished in thin air
Disappeared to God knows where

Well I’ve been thinking
Thinking bout her and maybe whether
whether we’ll just talk about the weather
or whether she’ll keep me
And maybe whether I’ll be better than I’ve been
Oh yeah whether I’ll be better when she needs me
Track Name: Montevideo
I'm leaving rehab till another day
There's too much fun going on around anyway
They never sleep as far as I can see
They're mixing cocktails and they're naming them after me

Don't need much money cos the drinks are free
Hey everybody they're on me
Clash City Rockers is the only place I wanna be

Hey Montevideo Oh oh oh o
Hey Montevideo Yeah yeah
Hey Montevideo

You'll be the end of me

I should've been in bed hours ago
where the time goes when your having fun I don't know
My head is dizzy and my knees are weak
Its getting light outside but its too early to sleep

They all go crazy when the sun goes down
Who needs the daylight anyway
There's only one thing on my mind and I've gotta say

Hey Montevideo Oh oh oh o
Hey Montevideo Yeah yeah
Hey Montevideo

You'll be the end of me

And now I'm half a world away
Telling myself going back there one day
Yeah I'm half a world away.........
What can I say
Going one day
Going to stay
Track Name: Too Late
Faded Photograph
How we used to laugh
But we rowed instead
Said things best not said

And it got too late
Yeah it got too late
Oh it got too late
Babe its just too late

Getting over you
Getting over you
Not what I can do
Getting over you

Cos it’s got too late
Yeah it’s got too late
Babe it’s got too late
Oh its got too late

Yeah it’s got too late
Oh it’s got too late
Yeah it got too late
Oh it’s just too late

Faded Photograph
Sometime in the past
When we were complete
When the world was sweet

But it got too late
Yeah it got too late
Oh it got too late
Babe its just too late
Track Name: His Name
Cold Night, out alone
Head down, on her way from home
Street light, waiting there
On his bike, a Norton bathed in Chrome

Every evening they meet by that light
Walking in the park on Sundays
Secret rendevous out on his bike
Still she never really knew his name

Cold Night, he's not there
Street light, standing tall and bare
Whisper, in her ear
Don't look back, I'll always be here

Suddenly a newspaper blows by
Boy killed on a Triumph Norton
Seemed there was a street light caught his eye
It said they didn't really know his name

She thought she heard his whisper in the dark
Standing by that lonely streetlight
Thought she saw his shadow in the park
Still she never really knew his name
Track Name: Gotta Call Simone
All alone in a foreign town
Pretty girls are running all around
On the beach and everywhere
Girls parading in their underwear

Everywhere that I turn
Pretty Girls are making my eyes burn
Got an itch and I've got it bad
And It’s the badest one I've ever had

I said ooh ooh ooh
Don't know what I'm gonna do
I said Ooh ooh ooh
I’m Going crazy need a shot of you

I gotta call Simone
Get her on the telephone
I Gotta call Simone
But nobody's home

I gotta call Simone
Get her on the telephone
I Gotta call Simone
Cos I'm all alone

Out at night and its still no good
Girls are running round the neighbourhood
Everywhere that I look
Pretty girls have got me on their hook

Everywhere that I turn
Pretty Girls still making my eyes burn
Still Got an itch and I've still got it bad
It’s still the badest one I've ever had

ooh ooh ooh
Don't know what I'm gonna do
Ooh ooh ooh
I’m Going crazy need a shot of you

I gotta call Simone
Get her on the telephone
I Gotta call Simone
But nobody's home

I gotta call Simone
Get her on the telephone
I Gotta call Simone
Cos I'm on my own
Track Name: If It's What You Want
if its what you want
And if its what you need
I'll give you what you want
If you'll just let me off my knees

You’ve got to let me know
I'm begging darling please
I'll give you all I own
If you'll just let me off my knees

I've got to be so strong
If you say no to me
If everything goes wrong
And I'm just left here on my knees

Everything you want
Everything you need
You'll find it here in me
If you'll just let me off my knees

I've got to be so strong
If you say no to me
If everything goes wrong
And I'm just left here on my knees

Everything you want
Everything you need
You'll find it here in me
If you'll just let me off my knees
If you'll just let me off my knees
Track Name: 77
Wardour Street on Monday Night
He's walking quick and feeling alright
He's buzzing and hopes he might
Get lucky with you

The Marquee' s hotter than hell
Its rammed and just to speak you must yell
He doesn't want to break the spell
And so acts cool

Seventy Seven
Teenage Heaven
Seventy Seven
He’s there with You

Seventy Seven
Better than Ever
Seventy Seven
Its all he wants to do

Later and the Speakeasy's full
Everybody's looking real cool
He's hoping he won't be a fool
So he’ll get lucky with you

Lemmy's on the fruit machine
Speeding on more than caffeine
The boy’s trying to blend in the scene
and impress you too

Seventy Seven……

Its 3 am the lights show up the grime
Its time to head out on the street
She turns to him his heart beats overtime
She says will you come back with me?

Seventy Seven…..
Track Name: All Fall Down
So we all came running home again
At the end of 4 long days
Yeah we all came running home again
Bruised and battered from the fray

And we all had things to think about
As we went our separate ways
Regrets and schemes to think about
And nothing said to save the day

now we're all going nowhere very slowly
Slowly getting there
And We're all left thinking how unholy
a mess without a prayer

So we all came running home again
To go our separate ways
All left losers in the game
with those who loved and gave us praise

Nothing ever lasts for ever
Nothing really comes for free
And when you see what caused your anger
You'll realise it wasn't me

So we all fall down
Yeah we all fall down
all fall down
Little boys all lost at sea

Nothing ever lasts for ever
Nothing really comes for free
It's only when it's really over
You realise it's not to be

So we all fall down
Yeah we all fall down
All Fall Down
Track Name: Shot in the Back
Wide awake on a brand new morning
Heaven sent without a warning
She's there
Hard Stare

All at once my legs are jelly
Dizzy head and dehli belly
Hold tight
stay upright

But she's got me down on my knees again
Lost in the rush for her hand

I was
Shot in the back
Everyone wants her
Shot in the back
They'll all kill for her
Shot in the back
Got to be near her
Caught in the flak
Can't live without her

Shot in the back
Things are getting scary
Shot in the Back
Got to be wary
Shot in the back
Say a hail Mary
Caught in the flak
Nothing can help me

Long blond hair, perfumed aroma
Just one look I'm in a coma
Heart stop
Makes my Knees drop

With a word she can command me
Make me smile or reprimand me
Do wap
makes my eyes pop

And she's got me down on my knees again
Giving her all that I can

But Iwas
Shot in the back….

And she's got me down on my knees again
Lost in the rush for her hand

And I was
Shot in the back….
Track Name: Aren't Women Wonderful
Always there when you need someone to hold you
Always there when you need someone to care
Always there when you need someone who knows you
Always there when you’re feeling small and scared

I said ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
Aren’t Women Wonderfull

Always there when you need somebody
Smiling eyes who’s kind and cuddly
Someone who can make the heavy light

Always there when you need someone
Soft and warm but bright and good fun
Someone who can make it all alright

I said ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
Aren’t Women Wonderfull

Always there when you need someone to scold you
Always there when you need telling off
Always there when you need your own sweet angel angel
Like a girl about who you’d write this song

I said ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
Aren’t Women Wonderfull

Always there when you’re in trouble
Need some help she’ll give you double
Always there to help and understand
Quite prepared to burst your bubble
But haul you out from all the rubble
When your world feels like its tumbling down

I said ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
Aren’t Women Wonderfull
I said ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
Aren’t Women Wonderfull
Track Name: Rolling On
It was another age
Beatles on TV
Football in the street
All my friends and me
We Played there all day long
We were all in clover
Nothing could go wrong
Time just rolling on
Well a small town's cool
Till you reach 16
Till the sirens call
From a brighter scene
So I packed my bags
and I moved to London
For a bright new dawn
Time just rolling on
Well I found a job
In a factory
Where I made some friends
Played guitar like me
and we formed a band
We were all in clover
Nothing could go wrong
Time just rolling on
But life moves on
New things become important
New Horizons call
To spur you on
Busy making plans for the future
While time keeps rolling on
So I'm sitting here
looking back on life
my daughter's all grown up
Still got a lovely wife
And Everything’s just fine
Everything’s in Clover
When all is said and done
Time's just rolling on
When all is said and done
Time's just rolling on
Track Name: Bonus Track: Baby Baby
Staying at Vom's it was a long long day
in his bar and I couldn't get away

Lay on the floor but I fell right off
Thought I'd better call it a day and stop

Saw a vision in white on the stairs
She made me dumbstruck
All the same I chanced my luck

And I said

Baby Baby lets take a ride
We can make these planets collide
Baby Baby lets run away
Live together Just for a day

Baby Baby, what do you say
Now you know that I feel this way
Baby Baby give me a chance
Jump on board for a wild Romance

She was standing there looking at me
I was swaying my balance all at sea

I was looking at 3 of her
All her features were just a great big blur

She said Duncan you're such a big fool
I swear on my life
Can't you see straight I'm your wife

So I said …..

Baby Baby lets take a ride
We can make these planets collide
Baby Baby lets run away
Live together For more than today

Baby Baby, what do you say
Now you know that I feel this way
Baby Baby give me a chance
Jump on board for a wild Romance
