about

On a Saturday winter’s evening when it gets dark early in London, you can do a lot worse than take the Thames Clipper down the river to Westminster from Greenwich. It's a waterborne form of public transport like a bus or train and for £3 or so you go past the mini New York of Canary Wharf, under Tower Bridge and on past a lit up Tower of London. Then there's the Globe Theatre and a host of other treasures. Eventually you arrive at Embankment, where the hen and stag parties wait to board party boats for the night, each eying the other up in anticipation.
You can walk from Embankment up to the 12 Bar Club and maybe see TV Smith or one of a host of other legendary London performers. Or, at least, you can for now.
It was on such an evening I met up with my friend David Apps to take photos for the album cover of Little Big Head. We didn't get any photos we could use but I did get a song.

lyrics

Got a call to say hello
Should I stay or should I go
Oh I just don't know

The sky is dark it looks like snow
The wind is cold and it does blow
Yeah I just don't know

Riding on the Clipper
Staring at the river
Flowing through the night to who knows where
Party boat draws nearer
Things are getting clearer
Watching all the happy people there

Saturday night on the river and the world seems alright
Saturday night all the lights are burning bright
Saturday night on the river, all the world's out tonight
And I can't call another city home
And I'll be back however far I roam

Stepping out onto the pier
Crowds of girls in party gear
Well I just don't know
Boys in clusters standing near
Telling jokes and drinking beer
Yeah I just don't know

Walking to the 12 Bar
Strolling by the fast cars
Driving in the night to who knows where
Bouncers on the front door
Ready for a world war
But I'm alright when I'm in there.

Saturday night on the river …….
