about

The best holiday I ever had was a music odyssey with my wife through the cradle of Rock n Roll. We travelled from New Orleans up through the Mississippi delta to Memphis and onto Nashville. Driving through Tennessee, debating whether "Dollywood" would be just too tacky after the glory that is Sun Studios, a record called "As Good As I Once Was" by Toby Keith came on the Country music radio. I loved the lyrics which popped the line into my head "I'm just as good as I used to be, and boy I used to be good". Well, it's a dirty job but someone has to be big headed round here! I think it's the only time a lyric has come before the tune with me. I had some fun with the rest of the words; a little mickey take of myself.

lyrics

I've been looking in the mirror
Looking at my face there
Staring back at me

Stunned reflection in my eyes
Looking at the lines where
A young man used to be

Years spent living like a rock star
Nights spent on the tiles are
Catching up with me

Days spent playing Peter Pan are
Coming to an end, I
Guess it’s bound to be

Mmmmmmm But I'm just as good as I used to be
Mmmmmmm and boy I used to be good
Mmmmmmm I'm just as good as I used to be
Mmmmmmm and boy was I real good

Well, once upon a time I'd
Stay out all night long, a
Stallion in his prime

Now I'm likely to be shattered
Stamina in tatters
Bedtime on my mind

Girls were there for making passes
Now I need glasses
Just so I can read

These days I just take my chances
Swerving lewd advances
For a cup of tea

Mmmmmmm …..
