about

What a fantastic experience Brazil is. A wonderful mix of colour and chaos. If you want to grab a fascinating peek into its violently complicated history and culture I recommend a read of "A Death in Brazil" by Peter Robb.
Every single word of this song happened. Liz and I stopped off in Rio on the way to a tour of Argentina and Uruguay with TV Smith. I'd agreed to play a short set in a bar there with a couple of great local musicians, Mauk and Davi. The rest of the story is in the lyrics. We never got to play but what a night!

lyrics

Rio de Janeiro is one hell of a sight
The hills start to sparkle as the day turns to night
And high up in the heavens
Jesus keeps a watchful eye
For all the good it does him
No one cares I wonder why

Copacabana where the rich people play
Everything's for sale if you've money to pay
But high in the favelas
Poor folk try to make ends meet
For all the good it does them
History’s got them already beat

Was there we took a taxi to the rough end of town
Had to pay the driver more to take us around
To a bar in a street where the buildings come tumbling down

So we're living it up in a bomb site city
Watching all the girls looking oh so pretty
Yeah, and we're feeling alright
So we'll all get drunk tonight

Sat with a cocktail at a table outside
Laughing and joking as the people arrived
But somewhere in the wreckage
Something opened up its eyes
Fifty teenagers looking for someone rich to fry

They lined up on the street across from where we were sat
Eyes glaring, arms folded primed to attack
Liz said lets leg it
Run for our lives
I said you're in your high heels
Let’s stay and prepare to die

Was then a bald guy headed over the street
Laughing and joking said it’s nice to meet
To the teenage zombies who got bored
And went elsewhere to eat

So we're living it up in a bomb site city
Watching all the girls looking oh so pretty
Yeah, and we're still alive
So lets all get drunk tonight

Well the speakers blew up before the band could play
But the people kept on partying any way
It didn't seem to matter
As the sun rose on another day

So we're living it up in a bomb site city
Watching all the girls looking oh so pretty
Yeah, we were so alive
And we all got drunk that night
Yeah we all got drunk alright
Yeah we’ll all get drunk tonight
