about

An evocative film title from the 50s. Starring Deborah Kerr it was based on a play by Robert Anderson. In those days the idea of an affair between a married women and a student would have been outrageous. I’ve transposed the location to Waterloo Station, London with echos of that very British story of marital infidelity, “Brief Encounter”. The wife must waive goodbye to the young man, departing to live his life, while she stays to bear her loneliness, silently carrying on.

lyrics

Waterloo on Sunday evening as his train departs
longingly she looks on waving with a heavy heart

Oh oh oh
There he goes
Where God knows
She needs some sympathy
Bye so long
Life goes on
Ever on
With Tea and sympathy

Not hard to remember their first meeting long ago
Husband on her arm their eyes met as they said hello

Oh oh oh
The seeds were sown
But time has flown
And now she needs Sympathy
Who to tell?
Of this lonely hell
Just herself
For Tea and Sympathy

Bye so long
Life goes on
Ever on
And now She needs sympathy
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Tea and Sympathy
