I’ve read interviews with songwriters who’ve said “this song took as long to write as it took to play it”. “Bollocks” I thought, “It’s never that easy”.

Until this song arrived.

I just sat down at the piano and out it came with almost all of the lyrics fully formed. I’d been listening to “Junk” by Paul McCartney and hence the sentiment of the “faded photograph” and some of the flavor of the glockenspiel solo.

I don’t know why it’s a song of lost love and “things best not said” as I’ve never really had that in my life. Ours is not to reason why. Ours is just to sing and cry.

During the making of this album I caught a really bad dose of man flu and lost my voice. We replaced all of the vocals recorded while struggling with this affliction later on when my throat had recovered a little. This song was recorded at the beginning of that process when I was still suffering a bit and straining to hit the notes. A happy misfortune, I think, because the painful throat and weakness in my voice at the time adds to the plaintive nature of the song.
