about

When I was a teenager I came home after my first day at University and told my father I wasn't going there anymore because I was going to play in a punk band. As you can imagine, he was delighted. After that the dole paid me £5.50 per week and my dad, not unreasonably, charged £5 per week rent as encouragement to get a job or go back to college.

So, I had 50p per week to live on.

Each day I would walk from Pimlico, where I lived, to Maida Vale where Matt Dangerfield had his legendary studio at 47a Warrington Crescent and where The Boys would meet, drink tea, play cards and rehearse.

It was about a 4 hour round trip on foot.

One day, walking up the Edgware Road, Mick Jones of The Clash came running up behind me, ruffled my hair, and shouted "Alright Duncan?" as he ran to jump on a bus going to the same spot I was walking to. The Clash had just signed to CBS and I thought "Rich bastard being able to afford a bus!".

But it was worth it. We were going to be the next Beatles and all my dreams would come true.

lyrics

It's a long long way to Maida Vale
When you're walking there day after day
Empty pockets head filled up with dreams
Looking cool but all's not what it seems

Oh seventeen
dream boy dream

But no
He wouldn't change a single thing
He's gonna teach the world to sing
In harmony with his four strings
The wonder of the female form
Will follow him from dusk to dawn
One day he will be a king
The tills will ring out ring kerching
So he wouldn't change a single thing

Every day’s a walk to wonderland
Dreams of life spent touring in a band
Learning songs to take the world by storm
Seeking that escape route from the norm
