about

The song which has had the biggest impact on my life. It started with one of those blocked periods when I couldn’t think of anything to write about. So I put a post on Facebook asking for ideas. Among the good ones was a deliberately provocative suggestion from an insensitive see you next Tuesday, championing an issue which has been particularly damaging for musicians in the UK.
So I gave him both barrels verbally and wrote this song about the exchange with the “idiot”. Having finished the demo I played it to a wise friend and told him the story behind it. “That’s interesting” he said, “and what do you mean by “You’re singing the same words they do but to a different tune?””.
“Well, you know”, I said, “People are weird, aren’t they? Hard to understand”. “Have you ever tested for autism?” he said. “Don’t be daft”, I replied.
Well blow me down and two experts later I am, with ADHD thrown in for good measure. Suddenly everything made sense and was so much easier to deal with. Such as those indescribable feelings of agitation when my wife puts BBC1 on the SD channel (as opposed to HD) or when there’s any loose end that needs to be finished and put to bed.
If only it hadn’t taken me 63 years to find out. Life would have been so much easier!
Musically the song is inspired by the theme tune to a TV programme, Film Night, which was on when I grew up. A jazzy piece called “I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free” by the Bill Taylor Trio. It’s ended up far rockier than that under Dave Draper’s guiding hand and all the better for it. And thanks to Rich Ragnay. He asked if he could have a go at writing the lyrics, so I sent him the tune and he sent back a middle 8 instead. That’s very Rags but it’s a great Middle 8 and perfect for Maurice Hipkiss’ heart tugging pedal steel.

lyrics

There’s nothing you can tell a fool
That’ll make him change his point of view
Everybody knows it but no one knows what they can do

So reading all the words a fool
Thinking all the world needs their point of view
A mans gotta do what every mans gotta do

Oh oh oh Everybody knows it’s true
Oh oh oh a happy song will see you through
But oh some days
You're singing the same words they do
But to a different tune

So turning up on the wrong day
the fool gets both barrels in the fray
A verbal guided missile blast to make him go away

But all it does is make the fool
Carry on as if he all he says is true
Not a jot has changed
The fool still has his point of view.

Well Oh, everybody knows, it’s true
Everybody knows
The fools can’t help themselves
Along with everyone else
Their minds made up
There’s nothing you can say that helps
