I was asking myself one day what was the earliest thing I could remember? It was The Beatles on TV at the London Palladium. Everyone loved them, even my granny. She hated those horrible Rolling Stones but The Beatles were such nice boys, even with their long hair. Shame they wouldn’t get it cut. “It would be so much tidier” she would say. But in black and white Britain we were so proud. They actually went to America you know (can you imagine?) and Americans liked them as well!

The other memory was football in the street. When a car came we picked the ball up. Once it had passed we carried on with no-one keeping an eye on us.

Sometimes we went apple stealing in orchards around Canterbury and would be shot at by the farmer. Or played chicken on the electric train line between Dover and London. Last one across in front of the train was the winner as the train driver would blast like hell on his hooter. Jumping across the big electric line in the middle was the tricky bit for a six year old.

This attempt to write my life story in a song could have ended up being pretty short!

Writing the song I realized that those early days were the only time I’ve ever completely lived my life in the present. I’m always “making plans for the future” with one exception: when I’m on stage.

It was another age
Beatles on TV
Football in the street
All my friends and me
We Played there all day long
We were all in clover
Nothing could go wrong
Time just rolling on
Well a small town's cool
Till you reach 16
Till the sirens call
From a brighter scene
So I packed my bags
and I moved to London
For a bright new dawn
Time just rolling on
Well I found a job
In a factory
Where I made some friends
Played guitar like me
and we formed a band
We were all in clover
Nothing could go wrong
Time just rolling on
But life moves on
New things become important
New Horizons call
To spur you on
Busy making plans for the future
While time keeps rolling on
So I'm sitting here
looking back on life
my daughter's all grown up
Still got a lovely wife
And Everything’s just fine
Everything’s in Clover
When all is said and done
Time's just rolling on
When all is said and done
Time's just rolling on
