about

You may have seen the video diary I made while writing “Can I go Out Now Please”. In that diary I showed how I have a Dictaphone I must run to when a snippet of a tune comes into my head. If I don’t get there in time the tune is gone for ever. So I store up the bits and piece them together later like a jigsaw, in astonishment that, while I can hear it’s my voice singing the tune, I have no memory of them at all.
I played a few of my doodlings in the video diary and went on to develop one of them into Can I go Out. Nick Hughes watched the diary and had the temerity to steal one of my other snippets and turn it into a very fine song indeed. All power to his elbow. I have a treasure trove of similar bits I will never get round to finishing now.
I’m very proud of the lyrics. The poignant ache of a father leaving his son following marital separation but celebrating a connection found that they both love to sing Beach Boys songs at full pelt in the car.

lyrics

He wakes up early just before the dawn, another day in town, he’ll be working
But it’s this weekend he gets to see his boy, he’ll meet him at his mother’s, keep him for the weekend

They’ll take his soft top mustang head down to the coast
Ready for whatever comes, get away
Roof down, sunshine smiling on them both
Ready for some summer sun, every day

They’ll have the CD player on, and turned up loud
singing with the Beach Boys
Good vibrations, excitations now
Singing with the Beach Boys

thinks God only knows how much he means to me
Life is never easy, not always what it could be
And wouldn’t it be nice to be with him far more
Be there every morning, be there in the evening

right now, he’ll live life, take all that he can
Enjoy it when it comes along. Live the day
crank those tunes out shout for Barbara Ann
Surf imaginary Waves all the way

They’ll put the CD player on cranked up real loud
Singing with the Beach Boys
Good vibrations, excitations now
Singing with the Beach Boys

There’ll be fun fun fun all weekend long, and how
Singing with the Beach Boys
They can hear the music play, they’ll get around
Singing with the Beach Boys

we’ll be bombing round the B roads off the beaten track
sing along with songs that take us way, way back, again
Singing with the Beach Boys

and when the sun begins to set, we start to head on back
Time is just so precious it falls through the cracks, except when
We’re singing with the Beach Boys
